Kirsten Kunkle
Dr. Kirsten C. Kunkle, celebrated as the leading Native American soprano of her generation, is a voting citizen of the Mvskoke Nation and an acclaimed singing actress whose voice has been described as beautiful, powerful, ethereal, and captivating. She has commissioned and premiered sixteen original works, including one of her own inspired by her ancestor, the renowned Muscogee poet Alex Posey. Her recordings are preserved in the Library of Congress, the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian, and the Merkel Area Museum in Texas, and she is recognized on the Smithsonian’s list of Classical Native American Artists and Musicians as well as the Molto Native Music roster.
A dedicated champion of new and rarely performed repertoire, she has originated leading roles in multiple world premieres with the Philadelphia Opera Collective, including Shadow House, Jump the Moon, Opera Macabre: Edgar Allan Poe, and By You That Made Me, Frankenstein, and she has recorded extensively with the Comic Opera Guild. She performed the title role in the world premiere recording of Washington Square and made her European debut with the Sofia Philharmonic as Arabella in Strauss’s Blindekuh, later featured as a NAXOS recording artist for the opera’s acclaimed 2020 release. Equally versatile on stage, she has appeared in straight plays and musical theatre, including Machinal with EgoPo Classic Theater, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum with the Scranton Shakespeare Festival, and leading roles in Carrie, The Music Man, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, and Brigadoon.
Her operatic repertoire includes signature performances as Agathe in Der Freischütz, Suor Angelica, Mimì in La bohème, Contessa in Le nozze di Figaro, Rosalinda in Die Fledermaus, Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni, and Dido in Dido and Aeneas. She has twice been a semi-finalist for The American Prize in Opera, earned Honorable Mention in the Art Song and Oratorio Division, won the Pennsylvania District National Association of Teachers of Singing Artist Award, and made her Carnegie Hall debut in 2014.
