Cellist Sophie Benn is in demand as a chamber, solo, and orchestral musician. Performing engagements have included a benefit recital in Bretten (Germany) for the Lions’ Club International. Ms Benn has also performed as a soloist and chamber musician in Rio de Janeiro, Courmayeur (Italy), The Rothko Chapel (Houston), and Playhouse Square (Cleveland).
Sophie was the first prize winner of the 2010 Minnesota Thursday Musical competition. Passionate about outreach and education, Sophie is a presenter for CIM's Distance Learning program, which brings programming to schools around the world through videoconference technology. As a teacher, she is registered with the Suzuki Association of Americas and has taught private lessons, group classes, and orchestra sectionals. Sophie can also be found performing with Classical Revolution Cleveland at the Happy Dog.
In 2011, she joined forces with the Scordatura Music Society to present 12 by SeveN, a program of world-premiere chamber works. Sophie is currently pursuing a Master’s of Music degree at the Cleveland Institute of Music, studying with Richard Weiss. Ms. Benn graduated cum laude from Rice University with degrees in both Performance and Musicology, where she worked with Norman Fischer. Her musicology focus is in the works of Felix Mendelssohn. Sophie is currently principal cellist of the Cleveland Women’s Orchestra, and has been principal of the Shepherd School Chamber Orchestra and assistant principal of the Aspen Conducting Academy Orchestra. She also is a substitute cellist for the San Antonio Symphony. She is an alumna of several major music festivals, including the Banff Centre Masterclass and Orchestra programs, the Aspen Music Festival, and Meadowmount. Other mentors include Darrett Adkins, Melissa Kraut, and Tanya Remenikova. Sophie has performed in masterclasses for Matt Haimovitz, Raphael Walfisch, The Eroica Trio, and Alisa Weilerstein. Ms. Benn plays on a Leclerc cello, made in Paris in 1776.
