Cellist Carlyn Kessler recently graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Music, where she earned her Master of Music degree in Cello Performance and Suzuki Pedagogy as a student of Sharon Robinson. She completed her Bachelor of Music degree at CIM as a student of Melissa Kraut. Carlyn currently serves as principal cellist of the Suburban Symphony. A passionate chamber musician, she utilizes her love of chamber music through both international and local performances, education, and outreach. Carlyn is a founding member of the NOA Trio, which was selected to participate in the Advanced Piano Trio Program at CIM and performed in a weeklong residency with the Chamber Music Society of Detroit.
An advocate of presenting classical music in nontraditional settings, Carlyn performs regularly with Classical Revolution Cleveland in venues as far- reaching as the Happy Dog and 78th Street Studios. A proponent of new music, she collaborates regularly with emerging composers and performs with Cleveland’s contemporary UNION ensemble. Carlyn has performed throughout the Northeast in venues ranging from Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall to the Chautauqua Institution, as well as in Canada and England. She has participated in numerous summer music festivals including the Chamber Music Academy at Domaine Forget, Toronto Summer Music Festival, Banff Chamber Music Residency, Banff Master Classes and Festival Orchestra where she served as principal cellist, Chamber Music at Domaine Forget, the London Master Classes, Yellow Barn Young Artists Program, Meadowmount School of Music, and Bowdoin International Music Festival.
Carlyn has recently collaborated and performed with celebrated artists Martin Beaver, Axel Strauss, Pekka Kuusisto, Steven Dann, Eric Nowlin, and Frank Morelli. In addition, she has played in master classes for Joel Krosnik, Philip Setzer, Jaime Laredo, Ani Kavafian, Ralph Kirshbaum, Donald Weilerstein, Bonnie Hampton, Colin Carr, Gilbert Kalish, and Noah Bendix-Balgley, among others. Carlyn has received several awards including the Stamford Symphony Jeniam Foundation Scholarship and the Greenwich Symphony Orchestra Guild’s Dorothy Gluckmann Music Award. An active cello teacher and chamber music coach, she is a member of the faculty at The Music Settlement in Cleveland and maintains a private cello studio. Also an avid writer, Carlyn is a correspondent for the online publication ClevelandClassical.com.
