Keiko Ying began studying the cello in Boise, Idaho, at age 10. At 14 years old, she joined the Boise Philharmonic, and the following years of orchestral performing also included soloing with the Meridian Symphony and guest appearances with the Langroise Trio. Keiko studied for two years at Albertson College of Idaho, where she received the school's Outstanding String Award, then transferred to Eastman School of Music, to study with Distinguished Professor Alan Harris. She graduated from Eastman with a Bachelor of Music with High Distinction, and continued on with her Master's degree, during which she was awarded the Performer's Certificate. During these years, she also studied on exchange in Freiburg, Germany, before returning to work as Eastman's secondary cello instructor, teaching a string pedagogy class and serving several years as teaching assistant for professor Harris.
Keiko has spent four summers as an Orchestral Fellow at the Aspen Music Festival, where she served as assistant principal in the Festival and Chamber orchestras. She also performed on faculty chamber music concerts there with Leon Fleisher, Gil Shaham, Alex Kerr, Masao Kawasaki, Wu Han, Lawrence Dutton, and others. She also enjoyed a summer at the Spoleto Music Festival, where she sat principal for the Spoleto Festival Orchestra in 2005.
Keiko has served as principal cellist in CityMusic for the past three years, and section member in Syracuse Symphony for the past year. She recently completed her doctoral degree at Eastman and currently teaches cello at the Eastman Community Music School. She lives with her husband in Rochester, NY.
